Research and Development
Château des Charmes and the Bosc family have long been
recognized as industry leaders in viticultural and oenological research. Paul Bosc was the
first to prove that “vitis vinifera” grape varieties native to Europe could be grown commercially in
Canada after almost fifteen years of trial and error field work. He has long affiliated
himself and his company with organizations like the National Research Council to undertake research projects covering
many subjects including:
- Carbonic Maceration (1980)
- Clonal Selection (1981)
- Reverse Osmosis (1983)
- Vine Performance Relative to Tile Drainage (1988)
- New Canopy Management Techniques (1990)
- Climate Control Through the Use of Wind Machine Technology (2000)

Community Involvement
In May of 1994, the Bosc family opened their new château and it was immediately hailed as an agri-tourism landmark.
“Owner and winemaker Paul Bosc and his entire family have been working for and planning this move for the last decade, and their success is a signpost to the future of winemaking as a major attraction in southern Ontario. Without waxing too poetic, I see the opening of the new Château des Charmes as the starting point of the next chapter in Ontario winemaking. Château des Charmes has led the way, and others will follow, I am sure.”
Dan Kislenko, The Hamilton Spectator
The Boscs’ have generously donated the use of their château and its staff and facilities for many community fundraising groups including The Easter Seals Society of Ontario, The Terry Fox Foundation, The St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation, The United Way, The Rodman Hall Arts Centre and Theatre Beyond Words to name a few. The Bosc family and Château des Charmes financially supported Brock University’s CCOVI Capital Campaign and have also established a $25,000.00 student scholarship program at CCOVI. The Bosc family financially supports The Easter Seals Society of Ontario, The United Way, Niagara College and the Rotary Club of St. Catharines.
“The Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce proudly recognizes your strong industrial leadership and significant economic impact on the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Through your active and ongoing interest in the community you are considered to be one of our finest corporate citizens.”
In 2001, the Bosc family was honoured with the Easter Seal Society of Ontario Distinguished Service Award for “…outstanding commitment to the mission and work of the Easter Seal Society of Ontario…”
“You have rendered service of the greatest distinction and of singular excellence to the
benefit of society in Ontario and elsewhere.”
